Effective Tree Planting Tips: Protecting Young Trees and Plants from Grazers

How to plant and protect seedlings and young trees from grazers of all sizes.

Planting trees in any environment where there is a risk of grazing animals can be challenging, especially in dry conditions where young seedlings need extra care to thrive. In this guide, we’ll walk you through a practical tree-planting process, share tips for keeping your trees hydrated, and show you how to protect them from livestock, rabbits, and other animals.

Please remember: You should always try to avoid planting in dry conditions – this guide is here to illustrate the techniques for protecting your trees, and cover some best practices for planting if you do encounter drier weather.

Why plant trees in paddocks or other environments where grazing occurs.

Trees play a crucial role in many ecosystems. They provide shade for livestock, improve biodiversity, and enhance soil stability. Even in dry conditions, strategic planting with the right techniques can help ensure trees establish successfully.

Though the presence of grazing animals like deer, sheep, cattle and kangaroos, as well as smaller animals like rabbits and hares presents a challenge – it’s one that can be overcome with the right tools and practices.

Step 1: Selecting the Right Trees

For this project, we planted Acacia melanoxylon, a long-living acacia species that thrives in various conditions in Australia. When choosing trees for your property:

  • Opt for local provenance species – they’re better suited to the environment, with consideration for changing climatic conditions.
  • Consider longevity and shade potential – trees like acacias provide good cover.
  • Ensure they fit the landscape – trees should complement paddock use (if placed in a grazing area) and surrounding vegetation.

Step 2: Preparing the Soil

Since we were planting in dry conditions, it was vital to use a product to improve the condition of the soil and help it retain water and nutrients:

  • TerraCottem Universal Soil Conditioner provides essential nutrients, as well as biostimulants for added plant growth. The water crystals within this product will help the soil around the tree roots retain moisture for longer.
  • Water crystals – If you don’t require a nutrient boost, products like Mallee Aquasorb Water Crystals will retain moisture and reduce transplant shock.

Important Tip on Water Crystals:

Never place water crystals directly at the bottom of the hole before planting. When they expand with water, they can push the seedling out of the ground, leaving the roots exposed. Instead, mix them evenly throughout the soil.

Step 3: Planting the Tree

  1. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the root ball.
  2. Place the tree a little below ground level to help direct water to the tree roots.
  3. Ensure good root-to-soil contact by tamping down the soil gently; avoid air pockets as they can dry out the roots.
  4. Build a water well around the tree by compacting the soil to make a bowl that will naturally hold water (only do this if you are in a low rainfall area, or planting in a dry season).

💡 Pro Tip: Air pockets in the soil can prevent water and nutrient absorption, leading to dry roots and plant failure.

Step 4: Protecting the Young Trees

Newly planted trees are vulnerable to grazing animals like deer, sheep, cattle, and rabbits. Using tree guards is essential to protect them. When you select your protection strategy make sure you consider if doubling up your protection, by combining a smaller guard with a larger mesh guard is the best option. This will fend off larger grazers, and stop smaller ones from penetrating the mesh and nibbling the plant!

Popular Tree Guards and Their Uses

🌱 GreenGuard 360 – Protection Against Rabbits and Small Grazers
  • A circular biodegradable guard that wraps around the seedling, making it ideal for larger plants and easy removal.
  • 100% Australian made and plastic-free.
  • Designed to be placed inside a larger guard for dual-layer protection.
  • Flat-packed for quick installation.
🌿 GreenGuard POP Triangle – Protection Against Rabbits and Small Grazers
  • Fits easily inside a larger guard to prevent smaller animals from reaching the seedling.
  • 100% Australian made and fully biodegradable—breaks down naturally without harming the environment.
  • Quick and easy installation with a unique pop-open design.
🐑 Mallee Mesh Sheep Guards – Protection for Sheep and Smaller Deer
  • Strong galvanized wire mesh construction for durability.
  • Unique pop-up design allows for fast installation (watch the video for a demonstration!).
  • Secured with metal star pickets.
🐂 Mallee Mesh Cattle Guards – Extra Strong Protection for Large Animals
  • Made from heavy-duty galvanized wire mesh for ultimate strength.
  • Designed to protect trees from cattle, deer, and large browsing animals.
  • Easy to install with a pop-up mechanism.
  • Secured with star pickets and barbed wire to keep large grazers at bay.

By choosing the right combination of tree guards, you can significantly increase the survival rate of your young trees and help them establish strong roots in challenging environments.

Step 5: Installing the Guards

  • Place the tree guard around the plant. Installation instructions will differ depending on the guard you are using.
  • Secure it with stakes to keep it in place. Depending on the tree guard(s) you are using you will need to use stakes or canes of particular lengths and dimensions.

🔧 Installation Tip: Star pickets should be slightly angled when hammered into the ground. This creates tension against the tree guard, keeping it secure.

For detailed installation, check out the video at the top of the page!

Step 6: Final Touches and Watering

After securing the guards:

  • Water the tree thoroughly.
  • Monitor for animal damage or signs of water stress.

If planting in a dry season, continue watering periodically until the tree establishes strong roots.

Why Tree Guards Matter.

Using tree guards increases the survival rate of young trees by:

✔️ Preventing livestock and wild animals from trampling or grazing on them.
✔️ Shielding against rabbits and other small animals.
✔️ Providing wind protection and creating a micro-climate.
✔️ Allowing trees to establish themselves before exposure to wildlife.

In Conclusion!

By following these steps, you can successfully plant when faced with the threat of grazers of all sizes. With proper soil preparation, moisture retention strategies, and effective tree guards, your trees will have the best chance to grow strong and provide shade and environmental benefits for years to come.

If you’re planning a tree-planting project, be sure to choose the right species, prepare your soil well, and invest in protective guards to ensure your trees thrive!
